The Carlton Football Club embarked on the second stage of its journey under senior coach Brendon Bolton in 2017.

After registering six wins, the Blues finished the season in 16th place on the ladder.

Despite falling four points short of its 2016 output, Carlton won more quarters in 2017, demonstrating the growth of the playing group in its second year with Bolton at the helm.

With the team now on a break, we’re analysing each player’s year in statistics. Here’s the review for Carlton defender Sam Docherty.

OVERVIEW

Docherty was duly rewarded for a stellar season, earning a maiden All-Australian selection and Carlton’s first since Marc Murphy and Chris Judd in 2011.

One of seven Blues to feature in every game, the reigning John Nicholls Medallist finished first in the competition for total kicks and marks and second for metres gained and rebound 50s.

He was the general in Carlton’s compact defence, playing a sweeping role to lead the Club for intercepts (139) and rebound 50s (129).

If that wasn’t enough, Docherty also showed his credentials as a makeshift midfielder in the latter half of the season.

The 23-year-old now truly belongs among the game’s elite. 

BEST PERFORMANCE

Docherty’s supreme consistency makes this a tough decision, but his output in the drought-breaking win over Hawthorn earns top marks.

In a flawless performance, Docherty recorded 31 disposals (at 93.5 per cent efficiency), 15 marks, six rebound 50s and two goal assists to earn the David Parkin Medal.

SEASON HIGHLIGHT

The Etihad Stadium roof felt like it was about to lift off when Docherty put the Blues in front against North Melbourne in Round 10.

After receiving a handpass from Bryce Gibbs, the smooth mover quickly balanced himself and set sail for home from 55m out.

Normally a composed figure, Docherty’s goal celebration proved just how much it meant to him.
