The Northern Blues enjoyed a 13-point triumph over Collingwood at Victoria Park today.

In a low-scoring tussle, the Blues managed to hold on from a late Magpies flurry to enjoy a 9. 5.(59) to 6. 10. (46) win.

The game at Victoria Park was a continuation of Collingwood’s anniversary celebrations: today’s match was 125 years to the day since Carlton defeated Collingwood in their first ever game at the venue.

The result marked a perfect weekend from a Blues perspective, doubling up the win which Carlton enjoyed over Collingwood a day prior.

It was cagey in the early going, with only two goals kicked between the two sides in the first quarter.

From the opening change, the Blues were able to wrestle control of the contest, opening up a 15-point lead at the main break.

Between the middle two quarters, the Blues managed to kick six straight goals, with Collingwood unable to make full use of its shots on goal (2.9 at three-quarter time).

The home side managed to kick consecutive goals for the first time of the afternoon early in the final quarter, before the returning Daniel Gorringe kicked a steadier.

Collingwood reduced it to a 13-point margin, but Northern ultimately came away with their third consecutive win.

To an extent, the game mirrored the AFL match at the MCG a day prior, with the Blues doing the damage early against a dogged Collingwood.

It was again a spread effort across the board, with Northern’s nine goals coming from a spread of different goal-kickers.

A resolute back six was key for Northern, holding Collingwood to just two goals from 34 inside 50s up until the final change.

David Cuningham was electric in the middle with 24 disposals and a goal, while Harrison Macreadie was impressive again in his first VFL game. 

Similarly, Northern recruits Cameron O’Shea (31 disposals, 9 marks) and Luke Russell (20 disposals, one goal) showed their worth as the Blues managed to hold on.

The game saw six Carlton players return from layoffs, with Macreadie joined by Gorringe, Matthew Korcheck, Jed Lamb, Ciaran Sheehan and Liam Sumner as those who didn’t feature in last week’s win over Coburg.

The win means it’s the first time in three years where the Blues have had a 3-1 record after four rounds, and sets up a pivotal clash with the Casey Demons on Mother’s Day.

The game will Northern return to Preston City Oval, hoping for a breakthrough fourth consecutive victory on Sunday at 2pm.
