Steely Simpson rolls on
Kade Simpson has been lauded for his courage and character after his 150th consecutive AFL match
Simpson finished with 25 disposals, seven tackles and two goals in the 67-point win over Greater Western Sydney at Etihad Stadium in a typically hard-working display.
Fellow Blue Heath Scotland described his teammate and friend, who turned 28 on Saturday, as among the most courageous he's seen.
"He [Simpson] is built like a whippet, but he cracks in as hard as anyone," Scotland told AFL.com.au after the match.
"He's one of the toughest footballers I've ever played with.
"He puts his head over it when the ball's on the ground, he backs into packs, and he's got the courage to gut-run when he's exhausted for multiple efforts.
"He does it all, and it's great to see him achieve such a great milestone."
Simpson holds the longest active streak in the AFL, and in reaching 150 straight games became the 19th player in competition history to achieve the feat.
He has played 163 games in total.
Scotland said the milestone was testament to Simpson's professionalism, and just reward for a likeable character, whom coach Brett Ratten described as "the spirit of the team".
"He's one of those blokes that everybody loves," Scotland said.
"You couldn't say a bad word about him.
"He's a real team man, and he has genuine care for his teammates."
Recognised alongside Simpson at a presentation by club president Stephen Kernahan in the Carlton rooms after the game were Eddie Betts and Shaun Hampson.
In his 50th career match Hampson was the Blues' best player, booting three goals and collecting 31 hit-outs.
Betts had a relatively quiet 150th game, held goalless by Giants defender Adam Kennedy.
But the small forward was praised by Scotland as another key contributor to the Blues' climb up the ladder in recent years.
"Everyone talks about talent with Eddie, but he works as hard as anyone," Scotland said.
"He's worked extremely hard the last five or six years, and he's getting the most out of himself now.
"He's an exceptional person as well.
"It was great to have two people like that play their milestones on the same day."
