The Northern Blues Football Club has welcomed Alex Johnson in a dual role for the 2019 season.

A premiership player at Sydney, Johnson will take on the role as Head of Development for the VFL Blues from next year.

He will also pull on the jumper as a player, upon the completion of his recovery from an ACL injury sustained in August.

Johnston’s story in the AFL has been well-documented, enduring the unluckiest of runs after enjoying the ultimate success back in 2012.

In that time, Johnson — while being devoted to his rehabilitation — spent time assisting with Sydney’s NEAFL side in a coaching and developing capacity.

His determination and perseverance was evident when he returned to football this season after over five years on the sidelines. Despite another setback late in the year, Johnson hasn’t given up on the AFL dream and is eyeing an early return in 2019.

Northern Blues General Manager Ben Brennan said the Club welcoming Johnson was a major coup.

“We’re thrilled to welcome Alex to the fold. He’s one of the most committed people I’ve ever met,” Brennan said.

“He’s definitely got a unique outlook on football and has a lot of experience in a number of areas. The way he has responded to setbacks has shown enormous character and he will be a tremendous addition to our group — he already has been.

“As a player, we know he’s been through a lot but we know what he’s capable of and both he and the Club have full confidence he can get back to full fitness.

“‘AJ’ already had experience in the development space, which is pretty unique for someone his age. He’s already started working with Josh Fraser and he’ll be another valuable voice for our players.”
