Carlton Coach Mick Malthouse has dismissed suggestions the Blues are rebuilding, saying the inclusion of four debutants this season is all part of ensuring the best side runs down the race.

Nick Graham will become the latest recruit to make his debut, in tomorrow's clash with Richmond at the MCG.

Malthouse says Graham has worked hard and earned his place, after having his start to the season delayed with a knee injury.

"He's close to the last person to leave this place – that says a lot about him and his professionalism. He's young man, only 18 or 19 years of age, and it's fantastic to have him on board."

Graham's inclusion is one of five changes to the side – he'll be joined by McInnes, Robinson, Casboult and Bell.

It comes after Watson, Garlett and Judd were ruled out injured, while Cachia and Rowe were omitted.

Malthouse says Judd's absence in particular, will give others the chance to step-up.

"I think that it would be fair to say that Chris Judd is not Benjamin Button.

"The role he has played in this organisation – he draws so many people to him, including opposition players. He allows the others to perhaps escape a lot of scrutiny.

"With Chris now out of the side, it means that it will give others the chance to now demonstrate that they are going to take his spot."

Meanwhile Malthouse has thrown his support behind skipper Marc Murphy, saying he's the best man to captain Carlton.

"We have a wonderful young man that is captain in his first year. It's a learning process for him, as much as anyone else.

"Marc's in that process and we are delighted with his ability to absorb. He wears his heart on his sleeve.

"He is very, very passionate about Carlton, he is very, very passionate about the supporters, he is very, very passionate about his team mates – and he's going to lead the charge."
