Patrick Cripps has placed second in the Shadforth Financial Group AFLCA Champion Player of the Year award.

Despite playing in just two wins for the season, the midfield bull’s standout individual year saw him finish behind Melbourne’s Max Gawn.

Cripps polled 91 votes, with Gawn finishing six ahead on 97.

It included an eight-vote game on the weekend, which catapulted him ahead of third-placed Tom Mitchell.

He produced nine games of eight votes or more, and was voted best-on-ground in seven matches.

The award is based on the votes of the AFL coaches, who vote on a 5-4-3-2-1 basis each week.

It’s another honour for the 23-year-old, who broke the contested possessions record in a home-and-away season at the weekend.

He was also nominated in the All Australian squad of 40. The final team will be announced on Wednesday.
