ALREADY cementing her place as captain, star defender Bri Davey has implored her teammates to remain focused on the ‘task at hand’ heading into the second season of the AFLW. 

Touted as early premiership favourites for AFLW 2.0, Davey was quick to shut down the external commentary after she was unveiled as Lauren Arnell’s successor on Thursday night.

“It’s a bit early (to talk premierships) but we’ll definitely need to take each week and each game in our stride,” Davey said.

“Ideally, everyone would love to be in that premiership chance, and hopefully we do make it down that track… But right now we need to focus on the task at hand, refining our craft and finishing our pre-season campaign strongly before we get into it. 

“We’re just really excited for the year ahead and hopefully it will be a successful one for us.” 

Davey will be joined by Sarah Hosking (joint vice-captain) and Lauren Arnell (joint vice-captain) in the three-player leadership group, after a thorough process undertaken by the AFLW program to determine the Club’s leadership structure heading into the upcoming season, which kicks off under Friday night lights at Ikon Park against Collingwood on February 2.

Speaking with the media on Friday morning, Davey said she was "humbled" to receive the honour.

“It’s a massive privilege obviously and I am humbled. To be honest, I will probably just go about it like I have previously without the title and just be myself. I think all three of us show a real authenticity when we lead so I can’t imagine I’ll do anything differently,” she said. 

“I’ll be marshalling the troops on-field, that’s probably my strength, but I’ll really be getting behind all the girls to make sure they’re supported again.”
