NORTHERN Blues coach Josh Fraser assesses the performances of all Carlton-listed players who featured in the win over Coburg at Preston City Oval on Saturday:
Levi Casboult
Stats: 12 disposals, 6 tackles, 1 goal, 35 hit-outs
From the coach: I thought he rucked really well. He ended up with 35 hit-outs but it was his follow-up work at ground level which was really impressive. He was able to get around the ground and take some contested marks as well. Levi took another step forward in his game as he looks for that consistency over four quarters. His impact was important for us on the weekend.
Tom De Koning
Stats: 12 disposals (10 contested), 4 clearances, 14 hit-outs
From the coach: We liked lots of what Tommy did. I think the way he’s jumping and rucking in general is pleasing. However, for a young tall, to be able to follow-up at ground level the way he is and to play with the energy he brings is really important for our group. I love the way that he’s launching for marks, he’s done that pretty consistently this year — he plays with a real free spirit.
Jarrod Garlett
Stats: 5 disposals, 3 tackles
From the coach: We saw some moments where he was able to get the ball and show his dash and flair. To impact over four quarters is a part of his game which he needs to work really hard on. We know he’s got the talent and we’re looking for more from him.
Jesse Glass-McCasker
Stats: 6 disposals, 2 goals
From the coach: Jesse came back from an injury layoff and played as a key forward. He was able to hit the scoreboard with a couple of goals in the third quarter. He also showed an ability to lead up at the ball at different stages. Hopefully he gets some confidence out of that.
Patrick Kerr
Stats: 12 disposals, 7 marks, 1 goal
From the coach: I thought his game again was pretty strong. What he’s been able to do as a young player is build consistency week-by-week. He’s becoming pretty dependable for us and he’s rarely beaten with his work in the air: he probably could’ve finished with three or four goals again so he’s got work to do in that space. The pleasing thing is he’s started to assume the role as a leader for us.
Harrison Macreadie
Stats: 13 disposals, 4 marks
From the coach: I thought ‘Creads’ had quite a solid game as a defender and took a step forward from the previous week against Casey. Some of his work in the air was impressive and he kept his feet around contests really well. Importantly, he was able to instruct and organise others around him.
Cillian McDaid
Stats: 6 disposals
From the coach: He’s another one that has missed a lot of football, so he only played half a game. He took a terrific intercept mark and on a couple of different occasions, Cillian showed the lateral movement and dash that he’s got. He left us pretty excited about his talent and we’re looking forward to more from him with a strong end to the year.
Aaron Mullett
Stats: 21 disposals, 7 tackles, 3 goals
From the coach: His impact on the game was important. ‘Trout’ played as a winger and his tackle-and-hunt was much-improved from the week before while he ran some strong patterns. He showed class with the ball and managed to finish with three goals. He had a solid impact.
Cameron O’Shea
Stats: 21 disposals, 13 tackles, 5 clearances
From the coach: Cam played as an inside midfielder: we’ve lost some personnel through there. With his bigger body, aggression at the contest and ability to hunt the ball, he played an important role for us around stoppages and got the ball going our way.
Angus Schumacher
Stats: 13 disposals, 4 marks
From the coach: ’Schuey’ played more through the midfield again while spending some time on the wing. He’s grown his game enormously with his running patterns to a level which we’d expect of an AFL footballer. Added to that, his intent and hardness have grown each week, which is becoming a consistent part of his game, as is his aerial craft. We think as a young player he’s grown a lot this season.
Matthew Shaw
Stats: 13 disposals, 5 marks, 3 rebound 50s
From the coach: He had some good impact on the game when he was in a position to defend his man first and then work off him. He keeps looking for consistency over four quarters, but we know he’s got a good skill-set with ball in hand — he’s quite creative for us. It’s about finding the balance of when to defend and when to run and create.
