WITH several star Carlton players rested on Saturday night there were plenty of opportunities on offer against Geelong and Shaun Grigg certainly grabbed his.

The 20-year-old onballer put in an eye-catching 27-possession performance against the Cats, but was still a little disappointed not to have come away with the win.

"We expect to win every time we come out and play. We had a crack at them tonight, but unfortunately we came up a bit short," Grigg said after the 17-point loss.

"It doesn't matter who's playing; as long as you've got that navy blue jumper on you've got expectations on you. But I thought our pressure, tackling and overall intensity was pretty good.

Grigg said the spirited performance against the Cats would be sure to foster belief in the younger Carlton players.

"We just looked at it as an opportunity for the blokes in the team. We had a really young team out here tonight and they had a lot more experience, but I think we acquitted ourselves very well.

"It's good for the younger guys to get a game and get a taste of it. It's not a win, but it's probably still a step in the right direction."

Grigg also kicked a goal in the promising display and while he agreed it was a confidence booster, he wasn't about to get ahead of himself.

"Whatever role Ratts wants me to do I'm happy to do it. I need to be flexible to fit into the team," he said.

"It was good to get a bit more time in the midfield and try and pick up the slack with Juddy and the rest of the boys out of there.

"No matter who is in there we play to our structures and I was just lucky enough to be the guy in that structure to get a bit of the ball."
