VINDICATION and validation. They’re the two words that sum up Michael Gibbons’ reaction to yesterday’s news.
Gibbons officially realised a dream when he was informed in front of his teammates that he would be a Carlton rookie in 2019.
After years of starring in the VFL and impressing at Ikon Park throughout pre-season, Gibbons said finding out the news and where he’s come from was an unforgettable experience.
“It was a bit of a whirlwind in there for those five minutes but it’s an amazing feeling,” Gibbons said.
“It’s a validation for all of the hard work and sacrifices — it’s finally worth it.
“This place is going places and I’m so excited to be on board.”
As the pre-season camp on the Sunshine Coast drew to an end, Gibbons — and fellow new Blue Matthew Cottrell — were caught by surprise when Brendon Bolton informed them of their fate.
The reaction that followed was something that Gibbons won’t be forgetting anytime soon.
“I had no idea at all,” Gibbons said.
“Everyone was having a bit of a laugh before Bolts took over, gave us a bit of a pump-up and told us the news before we got swarmed. It was unbelievable.”

This was definitely not one of those times. #BoundByBlue
After being invited to train with Carlton in November and forming close relationships with his new teammates, Gibbons said he couldn’t wait to get started and repay the faith to the football club.
“I’ve been here the last couple of months and I’ve made great bonds with all of the lads. The boys have been unreal,” Gibbons said.
“The group is so tight and so close and they’ve made us feel welcome from the start. I think from the way they swarmed us, that’s what’s going to carry us forward from now on.”
