CARLTON VFLW co-captain Natalie Plane is a proud Kamilaroi woman who hopes to pave the way for young Indigenous athletes.
After switching to football from cricket, one of Plane’s main goals was to be a role model for Indigenous boys and girls.
Along with fellow Indigenous Carlton representative Madison Prespakis, Plane hopes to lead the way for future Indigenous representation in female sport.
“One of my goals is just to try and get young Indigenous females excited about sport and the opportunities that we have at high levels,” Plane said.
"Ever since Byron, there hasn’t been another Pickett. Since Leon, there hasn’t been another Davis."

While he won't be out there on the weekend, the significance of Sir Doug Nicholls Round isn't lost on Jarrod Pickett.#BoundByBlue
“Whether it is cricket or football or any other sport, I just want to try and act as a good, strong female role model for them.
“Hopefully we can lead the path for future young Indigenous kids.”
After seeing Carlton’s Indigenous jumper design for Sir Doug Nicholls Round, Plane was driven to make sure she pulls it on one day.
“I’d be pretty sick (to wear the jumper),” she said.
“Unfortunately, there’s no Indigenous round in the women’s competition and I really hope in the future that there is one.
“It’d be a great honour to be able to not only represent the club but also represent my family and where I am from.”
As the #VFLWBlues campaign gets underway, there's a special announcement to make.

Nat Plane and Megan Neill have just been informed they'll be joint captains for the 2019 season! #BoundByBlue pic.twitter.com/OsPWloUnzq
Plane was also lost for words when she was announced as co-captain of Carlton’s VFLW side, along with Megan Neill.
“I was pretty shocked when I found out,” she said.
“I’ve never actually been in a leadership group before so it’s been one of my goals to try and push in and get that opportunity.
“I didn’t really have any idea that it was coming. Being co-captain was definitely more than I expected.”
Here's the full side to take on the Southern Saints on Sunday.
