IT’S not the worst trivia question — who polled the three Brownlow votes in Carlton’s final AFL win at Ikon Park?

The answer: current interim coach, David Teague.

In a year where Teague would go onto become the John Nicholls Medallist, his performance against Melbourne in Round 21, 2004 summed his season up perfectly.

With 16 disposals (10 contested) and eight one-percenters, Teague resembled a brick wall in defence against Russell Robertson as the Blues recorded a 31-point win.

It was Carlton’s second last AFL game at its traditional home, and proved to be its last win.

Looking through the team sheet on the day, history shows there were a number of storylines to come out of it.

Anthony Koutoufides was again among the Brownlow votes, Andrew Carrazzo played his first of 194 games and another future Carlton coach - a certain D.Harford - played his final game at a ground where he would lead the AFLW side to a home preliminary final 15 years on.

However, it was Teague who stole the show.

It capped off a career-best personal season for the defender, who also went on to be voted the AFL’s most courageous player by his peers.

That was never more evident than Teague’s contest with 10 minutes remaining.

Despite the game more than likely being done and dusted, Teague ran back with the flight with reckless abandon to take a quite incredible grab. It was the exclamation mark on an already impressive afternoon.
