THE NEED for 120 minutes.

After two consecutive wins, AFL Senior Coach Michael Voss wants his Carlton side to leave nothing to chance when taking on an in-form Geelong in front of another big crowd at the MCG this Sunday.

With the two sides sharing some hard-hitting, high-octane battles in recent years, Voss is expecting more of the same in Round 7: here's what he had to say in his weekly pre-game press conference.

On Jacob Weitering:

"He should get through most of the training session today. The requirement for us isn’t to have him do 100 per cent: fortunately he’s done plenty of the pre-season, had heaps of training and played every game. He’ll go through his paces today, but we expect him to be ready to go.

"He’s got a great tolerance: when you have to get through a full season, there are times where you aren’t feeling 100 per cent but at the same time, they’re out there to perform. He’ll be fit and ready to go, and he’s going to have a pretty big challenge on his hands against Geelong this weekend."

On Harry McKay:

"For our forward mix, having a bit of continuity and cohesion up there will help. Those magnets have moved a fair bit in the first five or six weeks of the year.

"To be able to have Harry and Charlie there leading up the front, we’ve also had a few smalls impacting the game last week as well. It’s a collective response that they’ve gone after, and we’d love to be able to settle them down up there so they can settle into their roles."

On Lewis Young potentially playing in the same forward line as Curnow and McKay:

"Everything is form-based, and he has certainly asked that question. What he did last week and against the Bulldogs, for him to be able to come in and play that traditional utility role has been pretty handy for us.

"Knowing that we’ve got a player that we can flip forward and back, we’ve seen across the competition that if you can have that to impact at different stages of the game, it gives you that tactical flexibility."

On Sam Docherty:

"We feel like the guys played a strong game last week and they’re pretty well settled. ‘Doc’ won’t play this week, I’m happy to declare that - he’s part of our squad.

"He’ll go back and get the form he needs to fight his way back in. We feel like the side that we’ve been able to put out there in the last few weeks has been fairly settled: there won’t be too many changes."

On Geelong’s recent form:

"They’re very aggressive in the way they play. They were two really good contests [last year] and we expect it to be the same. They’ve got a lot of threats behind the ball and right throughout the whole ground.

"They’ve added a couple of important pieces which really helps their run, and they’re an aggressive side so we need to make sure that we are pretty sound defensively. We don’t want to be sitting in a game where we feel like we’re in a shootout: we’ll adapt to what’s needed when we need to do it."

On considering a run-with role against a Geelong midfielder:

"We tend to take on the team, we like to think we’ve got a few things for them to consider as well which I’m sure they’ll put their attention towards. There’ll be a team approach to it, but clearly guys like [Max Holmes and Bailey Smith] are going to have impacts on the game at various stages.

"As a playing and coaching group, we’ll have to consider that at the time and see what we need to do about it. They’ve got a really good flexibility in their side: while Holmes has played midfield, he can flip forward and back. He’s got a few different positions he can play depending on what they’re aiming to achieve."

On building momentum after two wins:

"We’re looking for the consistency of how we turn up every week: that’s what I’ve been impressed with. In the early stages of the year, clearly results weren’t going our way but it felt like what we were doing here to prepare ourselves was as good as we have been.

"We’ve tried to double down on those habits and make sure we take care of what we can control, and not get too lost in what’s being said or the results. Keep our eyes in, look at the next opponent in front of us. I don’t think that’ll change, and I hope it doesn’t change based on whether we’re winning or losing. If you have that level of consistency and those habits over time, it’ll work itself out.

"That doesn’t mean it gives us a greater chance of winning this game, but it does give you a percentage chance of being able to win the game. We’re playing the right way, we’re valuing the right things and that’s going to be put to the test this weekend against Geelong.

"Last week’s game is done, we move onto the next one and what we try to do is play to that standard every single week: it’s got to start with what we do around the ball, the contest and pressure we need to bring and the selfless nature of how we want to play. That’s what we want to bring to every game we play, and it’ll be no different this week."

On the need for ‘a big scalp’:

"Anytime you get continuity in results helps, but I don’t necessarily decipher the wins by who they are against. The competition is tough and we respect every single opponent we play: it’s not up to me to determine what type of win it was.

"I’m more concerned with how we play, what our approach needs to be and the intent we bring towards it. There’s a standard we need to bring and we need to bring it for 120 minutes: this thing isn’t going to be done on 20 minutes of football.

"There’ll be momentum swings in our game, so it’s how we hang tough in those moments - because Geelong are a really good football team and are super efficient in the way they play. Our defence is going to have be on, and we’re going to have stay connected right through the game to get our job done."
