THE CARLTON Football Club has strengthened its forward line with the addition of Tara Bohanna during the AFLW Trade Period.

Bohanna arrives at IKON Park as of a trade that sees Gold Coast part ways with pick No.56 and their captain for Carlton’s pick No.41.

A quality character, the 29-year-old has served as the Gold Coast Suns captain for the past three seasons, booting a career-best 15 goals to guide her side to a maiden finals appearance in 2023. She also was named Gold Coast’s Player of the Series this season.

Not missing a game since February of Season 6 in 2022, Bohanna is a consistent and durable player who adapted extremely well to the elite nature of AFLW from the outset, earning a nomination into the All-Australian squad in her first season.

After previously playing basketball, Bohanna has proven herself to be a natural born goalkicker that will be a vital addition to the Blues’ forward line. A three-time leading goal kicker at the Suns, Bohanna’s composure in the big moments is a key attribute, which was evident when she kicked four goals in the 2023 elimination final against Sydney.

With a natural ability to find the goals, Bohanna kicked her first goal with her very first disposal in the AFLW. This season, the 29-year-old led Gold Coast in goals and goal assists while also placing equal-first in shots at goal and score involvements.

Head of AFLW Ash Naulty said the Club believes Bohanna will fill a real area of improvement for the side.

“To sign a player of Tara’s calibre is an excellent acquisition for the Club. Leading from the front, Tara furthers our leadership density in our side, especially assisting in developing our young forwards,” Naulty said.

“With 42 games under her belt, she's an experienced football as well as a high-performing athlete and leader, who we know will bring a dynamic presence that will complement our forward line and elevate the team’s attacking options.

“Throughout her career, she has proven her forward influence and ability to impact the scoreboard. We believe she will be a great mentor and help strengthen our emerging forward group, with the likes of Keeley Skepper, Mia Austin and Lila Keck all under the age of 21.

“We cannot wait to welcome her down to IKON Park.”
