GOT THE job done.

A rainy day at Windy Hill didn’t stop the Blues from dominating on the scoreboard by a match high of 24 points to get back on the winners list.

Tough conditions in the Round 12 outing between the Blues and the Bombers on King’s Birthday Eve proved to be a nail biter with both sides goalless at the first break.

This was the first VFLW game of the year for Jess Good, Dayna Finn, Abbie McKay and Gab Pound, and none looked like they had missed a beat. AFLW captain Kerryn Peterson stepped out onto the field for her first VFLW game in almost six years.

It was a relatively quiet first quarter, but credit is due to the defensive pressure from the visitors who kept Essendon without a scoring opportunity for the first 33 minutes of the match.

Sophia McCarthy started with a bang taking two strong chest marks in the forward 50, giving the Blues plenty of hope in finding their forwards among a defiant Bombers' defence.

A solid performance from both sides in the second quarter saw each team kick their first goals of the day.

Keeley Sherar (22 disposals, 15 tackles and six clearances) came alight and never backed down - never afraid to get in the action to gain possession of the ball.

Darcy Vescio was the first to make a significant impact on the scoreboard for the Blues near the end of the second quarter. A ground ball gather into a trademark right foot snap in the pocket put the visitors back in front by four points.

It was another 20 minutes of game play riddled with behinds due to the slippery conditions, but this didn’t stop the team in the Navy Blue.

Once the last quarter approached, the Carlton team and supporters could sense something big was about to happen after leading at each break.

The connection between Vescio and Maddy Guerin (23 disposals, five tackles and five clearances) started to click and it was all over for the home side.

Guerin, as accurate as ever, kicked the sealer and the confidence within the Carlton group kept on increasing.

Eliza Wood, faced with a four-on-one situation,  was able to weave her way through the Essendon defenders to kick the last goal of the day with 30 seconds left.

The Blues took full advantage of their scoring opportunities, winning the inside 50s by +7. Their structures also worked well leading clearances by +14.

There are just two rounds left in the VFLW season with both at home. Carlton will want to end the home and away season on a high with three wins on the trot.
