IN MATTHEW Kennedy’s 27 years, he wouldn’t have had too many better birthdays than that one.

At a venue where the Blues have never won before, Kennedy kicked two final-quarter goals as the Blues came from behind twice in the last 10 minutes to emerge with a stunning 10-point win.

It continued Carlton’s unbeaten start to 2024, and continued a trend of the Blues finding a way to win with their backs against the wall.

With his second goal essentially sealing the win with just seconds remaining, Kennedy - speaking to Carlton Media - provided an insight into those final celebrations on the day of his 27th birthday.

“It was a great moment, all the boys got around me. Big ‘King’ shouted in my ear, it’s still ringing, and I’ve almost lost my voice,” Kennedy said.

“The last five minutes was pretty hectic. Our ability to execute our game plan is a real credit to not only the boys, but the hard work we’ve been doing in the pre-season and during the season. Everyone felt a sense of calm in that moment.”

Not only did the Blues turn a nine-point deficit into a 10-point win in a matter of minutes, they managed to do so at a venue which has provided a fair share of nightmarish finishes in recent years.

Kennedy’s previous four contests at the Adelaide Oval saw a 55-point defeat (2018), a 19-goal run for Port Adelaide (2021), a season-ending injury (2022) and a Gather Round humbling 12 months ago.

Those birthday wishes all came true at once on Saturday evening.

“It’s pretty special. Coming over here and winning at Adelaide Oval for the first time, we’ve had a few tough runs here. It’s awesome to be able to get the four points, finally.

“Our supporters are amazing, wherever we go. You know they’re always going to rock up — you heard them in full voice.

“We’re very grateful for their support. Keep getting around us!”
