With key players out injured, Carlton's line-up underwent something of a cabinet reshuffle in Saturday's win over the Tigers.
Jarrad Waite played on the backline, and Bryce Gibbs joined swingman Lachie Henderson up forward.
The move saw Gibbs amass 23 possessions and kick two goals – including a spectacular shot from 55 metres out on the boundary.
The goal marked the beginning of Carlton's resurgence, the Blues coming back from 30 points down to take out a gritty win.
Speaking on radio 3AW, Gibbs said he's proud of the way his team responded.
"Our season has been on the line for the past couple of weeks and we need to win games of footy," Gibbs said. "When we dished up what we did last week it wasn't good enough, so we were all disappointed and definitely needed to respond this week against the Tigers. I'm glad – and proud of the boys that we did."
The emphatic win was an apt birthday present for coach Mick Malthouse, who celebrated his 60th birthday on Saturday.
Malthouse has indicated that Carlton's list will be cut at the end of the season, and Gibbs has told 3AW the pressure to keep spots is good for the team.
"Everyone feels they've got to perform to earn games, and Mick has certainly come in and said he's not going to gift anyone games," Gibbs said.
"Everyone is well aware that they need to keep performing to play and stay up the club. I think that's a good thing, and it's putting pressure on everyone to play at their best."
