DURING the 2019 AFLW season, Carlton forward Tayla Harris provided one of the most iconic moments in Australian sport: ‘the kick’.
Wearing Carlton’s 2019 Pride guernsey, Harris’s kick showed unrivalled athleticism, something never seen before in the football world.
This moment was captured by AFL photographer Michael Willson and went viral — not just in Australia, but all over the world.
Now, it has been etched in bronze.
Standing at 3.3m tall, a prototype of the statue was unveiled at Federation Square today.
Harris said she was humbled and excited by this statue and what it represented.
“It doesn’t matter if you’re a man or a woman, young or old – everyone has a right to do what they love,” Harris said.
“That’s what I want people to see when they look at this.”
Created by sculptor Terrance Plowright in the Blue Mountains of New South Wales, the final bronze statue is expected to weigh one tonne and has taken over 2000 hours to make to date.
The finished product is expected to be finished in early 2020 and its location is still being determined
