Carlton coach Mick Malthouse says he won't make any excuses for his side's disappointing start to the season 2015.

The Blues suffered their second loss for the season when they went down to West Coast on Friday night.

In his weekly message to Carlton members, Malthouse commended the Eagles and called on his players to stand up.

"I don't like to take anything away from our opponents and I thought West Coast played a desperate type of football that was marked by the way that they controlled the stoppages; their leadership was very good, they ran the ball well and we didn't cope," Malthouse said.

"There are areas that we have to get better at – I thought our start was good once again, but we're just not able to maintain it.

"What we really have to do now is get our leaders to be very strong when the opposition come at us and control the game."

Meanwhile the Carlton coach has sought to clarify his comments on free agency, saying for the most part, free agents only want to go to top four sides to give themselves the best chance of playing finals.

"We would like to attract players like that but where we finished on the ladder last year makes it very difficult," Malthouse said.

"Our goal is to finish high enough .. then we may be able to attract players through free agency."
