OCTOBER is Down syndrome Awareness and Disability Employment Awareness Month.

This month is aimed at educating the community about disability employment issues and celebrating the many and varied contributions of people with a disability in employment within Australia.

As part of the Club’s commitment to inclusion and diversity, Carlton has again partnered with the Inclusion Foundation: a for-purpose charity that champions the inclusion of people with Down syndrome.

Their mission is to see an inclusive world where people with Down syndrome are equal, active and respected members of society.

On Sunday 11 June, Shea, a member of the Inclusion Foundation joined the Club to deliver fan engagement match-day activations at the AFL Carlton v Essendon game.

At the game, Shea assisted the fan engagement team in coordinating Club mascots, the Blue Crew and a premiership cup viewing opportunity for those attending the match.

"My favourite part was feeling like a part of the team. Everyone was so friendly and welcoming, it made me feel right at home," Shea said.

"My other favourite part was getting to know the people who organise the game and the team mascots who I helped interact with the crowd."

The Club’s fan engagement team said “it was fun to work with Shea. She brought a lot of fun and energy to the team, especially when overseeing the Blue Crew and the mascots. We would absolutely do this again.”

A representative from the Inclusion Foundation noted the importance of providing equal opportunities to work for people with Down syndrome (or any type of disability), to not only provide financial independence but foster self-esteem, contribute to their sense of purpose and belonging, and challenge societal preconceptions.

“People can foster a culture of inclusivity and understanding in their workplaces. This begins with education about disabilities and debunking myths.

"Workplaces can also create inclusive job opportunities, provide necessary accommodations, and ensure the work environment is supportive.”

The Inclusion Foundation’s commitment to equal opportunities for people with Down syndrome has seen the creation of two incredible programs:

  • Impact21- providing meaningful and matched employment for employers and young adults living with Down syndrome.
  • Emotion21- providing evidence-based, innovative dance, fitness and wellness programs for people with Down syndrome.
