EMERGING Carlton forward Mia Austin has earned an AFLW Rising Star nomination for her outstanding performance in the Round 8 clash with the Giants.
In only her second year and first uninterrupted season, Austin's work ethic and athleticism have seen her adapt to the pressure and intensity of the AFLW level.
Austin was dominant in the game against the Giants, scoring two goals and a behind while amassing 10 disposals.
Currently leading Carlton’s goalkicking tally whilst playing alongside many notable forwards and against some standout opposition defenders, Austin also ranks among the elite players in the competition for contested marks.
Selected at pick No.18 (Victorian pick No.9) in the 2022 AFL Women’s Draft from the Eastern Ranges, Austin debuted in Round 1 of her first season and kicked a goal in each of her opening two games before injury.
Her professionalism and commitment to her rehabilitation have seen her return with guns blazing in 2023, and at the young age of 19, Austin has truly made a name for herself in season two.
She becomes Carlton’s second AFLW Rising Star nominee after fellow 2022 draftee Keeley Skepper’s nomination back in Round 3.
AFLW Senior Coach Mathew Buck said Austin’s nomination was reward for effort for the young key forward.
“After a tough start to her footy career, Mia has really adapted to AFLW level and continues to show her talent up forward,” Buck said.
“She has proved herself as a young key position talent who is playing a really important role for our team, and we think she’s only going to get better.
“Mia is very deserving of this recognition. Not only is she a star on the field, but off the field, Mia is also a really kind-hearted and genuine team-mate to those around her which is something we really stand for and praise at the Club.”
