CARLTON full-forward Brendan Fevola may be the foil for the Blues’ small forwards in their elimination final against the Lions at the Gabba on Saturday night.
Coach Brett Ratten believes Fevola will be a major focus for the Lions after he booted them to victory with eight goals back in round 11.
But he says double teaming the Coleman Medallist could work in Carlton’s favour.
“I dare say there will be a few more players around Brendan,” Ratten said.
“He might attract a crowd and hopefully we can find the free (man) that someone has zoned off or peeled off to assist Brendan’s man.”
The players most likely to be goal scorers include the three players who are back in the side after spending a week in the reserves for turning up late to a recovery session; Eddie Betts, Jeff Garlett and Cameron Cloke.
“If Brendan does draw the crowd, hopefully there are a lot of crumbs there for those boys to hit the scoreboard,” Ratten said.
“I think they really responded exceptionally well when they did get outed.
“Cloke played 60 per cent (in the reserves) and kicked four goals, Garlett would have had about eight chases and tackles in a short period of time and Betts kicked two goals in about fifty per cent (game time) so they played really well.”
Ratten said he won’t be judging Fevola’s performance by the number of goals he kicks.
“We want him to put in a good team performance,” Ratten said.
“Whether that’s him kicking five goals or none, his contribution with or without the ball will be like anyone else.”
Chris Yarran, Chris Johnson, Steven Browne and Setanta O'hAilpin are the unlucky players to be dropped for the elimination final with Shaun Grigg also winning a recall after missing since round 17.
But Ratten says O’hAilpin in particular could force his way back into the team should the Blues win on Saturday night.
And Ratten said he would not be surprised to see the entire injured Lions quartet; Simon Black, (hamstring) Josh Drummond, (quad) Daniel Bradshaw, (quad) and Daniel Merrett (hamstring) turn up to play on Saturday night.
“All four have been named, until they pull out we’ll put them into our calculations,” Ratten said.
