The previous weekend’s bye has served as a godsend to the Northern Bullants, the Ants having inflicted a 50-point thrashing of Geelong at Visy Park last Saturday.

Brad Fisher featured in the Ants’ goalkicking frenzy with a four-goal haul from nine shots on goal, with Levi Casboult chipping in for two and pinch-hitting as a back-up ruckman to Robbie Warnock. Marcus Davies returned what was arguably his best game for the year off a half-back flank, having to play tall following the late withdrawal of Simon White.

Northern Bullants Coach David Teague said his players had prepared well after the layoff and were ready to go at the first bounce.

“Our tackling was probably the best it’s been all year and our use of the ball, particularly in the second half, was terrific. It was a pretty good result in the finish,” Teague said.

“‘Fish’ [Fisher] got Geelong’s best defender Jeremy Laidlaw and got nine shots on goal . . . four goals from nine shots wasn’t exactly the best of returns, but it reflected how hard he worked.

“Levi played his best game for the year. He played a little bit in the ruck, which got him into the game, and though he bobbed up for two goals the great thing was his field kicking.”

The Bullants, currently fourth-placed on percentage from Collingwood and Port Melbourne, now confront a hardened outfit in the Box Hill Hawks, at Box Hill next Sunday.

Northern Bullants 20.12 (132) defeated Geelong 12.10 (82)
