A BIT of spice.
While Senior Coach Michael Voss wants to treat this week like any other game, he admitted that clashes with the old enemy do have an extra edge to them.
On top of that, the prospect of playing to a packed-out MCG on Friday night is a scenario that any AFL player would dream of.
Sitting atop the ladder, Collingwood looms as a considerable threat to Carlton, but in his press conference on Thursday morning, Voss was adamant the Blues are up to the challenge.
“It’s pretty exciting: some of the noises at the end of last year [at the MCG] were some of the loudest I’ve ever heard,” Voss said.
“To be able to be in that environment often, it’s good to get exposure to these particular games that do take on a bit of extra meaning.
“We’re certainly aware of what is in front of us and the rivalry that exists, and we’ve played a couple of really strong games against each other last year – it’s an important game for both teams.”
Collingwood isn’t on top of the ladder for nothing, with the Pies ranking first in the least opponent points scored as well as goal assists, finding their teammates in better positions to kick a winning score.
The Blues are well aware of the danger that the Pies pose, having faced the old enemy in Round 10 this year, where they suffered a 28-point defeat.
Voss acknowledged the less-than-ideal performance from his side that day, but believed that this Carlton team was now a vastly different proposition.
“I think they well and truly outplayed us last time, I don’t think we should shy away from that,” he said.
“We fought out the game strongly and responded where we needed to but they were too strong for us on that night.”
One particular thorn in Carlton’s side was Darcy Moore, who equalled the intercept mark record the last time the Blues met.
Voss is hoping the front half of the ground can appreciate and guide their way through Collingwood’s system, but said they couldn't be too conscious of one individual.
“The forwards know the task they have on [Moore], it’ll be tough to score,” he said.
“They have some good system behind the ball, it’s not just Moore, it’s about their defensive system and how they support one another.
“We need to make sure we stick together through those moments, and if a few of those don’t work, move on and we have to recover as quickly as we possibly can.”
When asked if Voss has spoken to premiership teammate Craig McRae - his Collingwood contemporary - Voss said any conversations between the two would be put on hold for the next few days.
“He’s banned this week, off the contact list, got him on mute! We might catch up afterwards but certainly not this week.”
