LOOKING for his best season yet.
Matt Owies is one goal away from his all-time goal tally in a season, currently sitting on 15 goals for the year with eight games remaining in the home-and-away season.
As well as taking his opportunities in front of goal when they come (he has kicked 15.4 in 2023), Owies' main role is to cause havoc and pressure opposition defenders, embracing his status as a self-professed pest up forward.
Speaking on SEN WA ahead of this week's trip to face Fremantle, Owies referenced the team-first mentality on display in recent weeks when it came to the clean looks Carlton forwards have been getting inside 50.
“As a small forward, you have to take the most of the opportunities and especially lately, the boys have been sharing the ball a lot inside 50 and that’s the whole mark of our team game,” Owies said.
“I’ve been lucky enough to get on the receiving end of some nice passes and done my job and finished with a couple of goals.”
Backing up a strong win before the bye with a 10-goal triumph over Hawthorn, Owies wasn't the first to laud the team's comprehensive performance.
But, on the back of a six-game losing streak, Owies and the Blues are clear of the work that lies ahead, even though he was adamant that those inside the four walls never let the external noise affect them.
“We were working really hard behind the scenes for all those weeks and the belief never really wavered – it’s a really tight-knit group and I think the last couple of weeks, we’ve been playing a brand of footy that stacks up,” he said.
“We pride ourselves on the contest, our pressure and also on the back of that, our ball movement and our selfless attitude have helped us dismantle a couple of teams and play good footy.”
Round 17 has been selected as the Hyundai Help for Kids (HHFK) match day, where $500 from every Carlton goal will be donated to the Ronald McDonald House Charities WA.
With Owies on the verge of a career-best season in front of the big sticks, it was suggested he should kick six goals to result in $3,000 donated to the charity.
“That would be pretty good for everyone!”
Two families from Ronald McDonald House Charities WA are also coming along for an amazing weekend with the Blues, meeting the players at a training session before joining the team to run through the banner before the game.
