LAST time Jordan Boyd joined James Brayshaw and Billy Brownless on Triple M Rush Hour, it was all about his quite unique football journey.

Plus going to Fat Boy Slim with his old man on a Tuesday night at Revolver Upstairs. But mainly the football stuff.

Yet while the journey from Spotswood to Carlton has been spoken about a little bit over the last 18 months, particularly as Boyd continues to carve out his spot at senior level, there’s still plenty more than meets the eye for The Beatles-loving, wartime aficionado that is Carlton’s No.37.

For example, Boyd loves his cricket, and with the Ashes starting last night, there were more than a few mentions of his other sporting love.

He presented Australian legend David Boon with a team-signed guernsey during his IKON Park visit on Friday. And the boys in the Triple M box were just lucky they didn’t ask about Ryan Harris’ first-ball wicket at the WACA in 2013, because there’s every chance he’d still be there.

“I was just playing footy with mates for fun, plus cricket as well. My coach had to say to me that I should take footy a bit more seriously, and it’s worked out really well for me,” Boyd said.

“One of our development coaches [Torin Baker] was the Western Jets coach at the time I was coming through, and probably rightly so, he overlooked me.”

Boyd is now into his third year at IKON Park, having been selected in the mid-season draft of 2021, and has featured in all four games over the last month after overcoming two foot fractures.

He reminded ‘JB’ and Bill that he had come off the best game of his career when he spoke to them last year, and ended up injured just a few days later. “Hopefully that doesn’t happen again” was the well-natured quip.

It’s only natural with more time at the elite level that game-day traditions are created . . . or, in Boyd and partner Grace’s case, the day before the game.

The last few weeks has seen the two fully deep dive into Grace’s Italian heritage, forgoing the standard pre-night packaged pasta with their own homemade number.

It was ravioli in week one and fettuccine in week two, for all those playing at home — which has actually been the case for some of Boyd’s teammates and staff members.

“The past couple of weeks we’ve been making pasta pre-game,” he said.

“I’ve actually given it to some players and staff, and I haven’t killed anyone yet. That’s good.”

Yes, that is good.

It wouldn’t be a Jordan Boyd chat without some mention of his dad Jason, who has been living the footy-dad dream ever since his son was selected two years ago.

Travelling interstate to watch the team and heading to nearly every VFL game while wearing some sort of No.37 paraphernalia, regardless of whether Jordan is playing or not, Jason has “very much immersed himself in Carlton” according to the Blues half-back.

Even if there is one habit that the lifelong Collingwood supporter is struggling to rid himself of.

“My first game back was against Collingwood — that was interesting for him.

“I drove him home after the game, which was a bit of a mistake, because one of the first things he did say was ‘one game clear at the top of the ladder’. I wasn’t happy with that.

“He’s trying to hide it.”
