CARLTON ruckman Alex Mirkov will be sidelined for the remainder of the 2023 AFL season after the discovery of a leaking aortic valve in his heart.

The 23-year-old had been experiencing shortness of breath recently, which had subsequently been impacting his ability to train and play to his full capacity.

Further investigation by the Club’s medical team and a cardiologist revealed the extent of the medical issue, with specialists determining that surgical treatment would be needed to ensure Mirkov could make a full recovery.

He will meet with a cardiothoracic surgeon in the coming days.

Carlton Head of Football Brad Lloyd said Mirkov’s return to full health will be the priority over the coming months, before he is integrated back into the football program in the summer.

“Our medical staff have been working closely with cardiologists and specialists to ensure we gather all the information regarding Alex’s condition and the best path forward to allow him to return to full function,” Lloyd said.

“That extensive consultation has resulted in Alex needing surgery to correct the medical issue. It is expected he will be able to make a full recovery and be able to integrate back into the program for pre-season training later this year.

“Alex is a great person who is loved by our group, it is important to our club that we do everything we can to support Alex and his family during this period and we will be continuing doing so right throughout his recovery.”
