THERE’S more than a fair share of current Blues that champions of years gone by would love to play alongside.

For Greg Williams, the opportunity to use his precision hands to the run of Sam Walsh is one he wouldn’t pass up. Neither would playing alongside the “freak” that is Adam Saad, even he thinks that neighbour Ang Christou is a longer kick than him. Plus, he’d love to play with Charlie Curnow.

For Stephen Kernahan, he’d happily be a springboard (in his own words) for Carlton’s No.30 . . . a player who the Club’s greatest captain says he hopes “we still haven’t seen the best of”.

Ang himself wants to see Charlie and great mate Anthony Koutoufides in the same side.

And ‘Kouta’ would love that chance himself.

Sensing a theme here?

When asked which Blue of the modern day they’d love to slot into the team of the 1990s, the call was almost unanimous. So what is it about the reigning Coleman Medallist that entices the Blues of yesteryear so much?

Take it from Koutoufides himself.

“‘Crippa’ is unbelievable too. But to be able to play with Charlie, if he was in our team and knowing how versatile he could be, he would probably be able to cover me and I could’ve enjoyed myself right in the midfield and not have to go forward or back,” Koutoufides told Carlton Media.

There’s every chance that Koutoufides would’ve been the Carlton player of the 1990s that past - or present - Blues would’ve wanted to play with. There was always a mystique surrounding Koutoufides, a man widely regarded as the prototype in a footballing sense.

However, while there were games where he was unequivocally the main man and the star attraction, Christou (jovially, of course) begs to differ if Koutoufides and Curnow were in the same side.

“He could play Robin, like I played Robin . . . I’m sure ‘Kouta’ could play Robin and see what it’s like. ‘Kouta’ is playing Robin, let Charlie go!”

Step aside King Kouta, arise King Charles?

The former doesn’t disagree.

“”I probably would actually! Charlie is just a phenomenal athlete, so it’s hard to compare myself to him.

“He’s got the speed and endurance while I didn’t have great endurance, so he’s got me on that one. Being able to play everywhere on the ground made me a little different to other players, but I’m sure Charlie could do that too.”
