Carlton is set to play in 13 prime time matches in Season 2014, including three experimental Sunday night games.

The AFL unveiled its fixture for next season this morning.

The Blues kick off the season against Port Adelaide in a night match at Etihad Stadium on Sunday 16 March.

The traditional season-opener against Richmond has been delayed until Round 2 because of the MCG being unavailable.

The Blues and the Tigers will face-off on the night of Thursday 27 March, in their only clash of the season.

Carlton will play in return matches against Collingwood, Essendon, Geelong, Port Adelaide and St Kilda – with one match each against Collingwood and Essendon to be played in the new Sunday night timeslot.

Both of the Sunday night blockbusters will take place in school holidays.

As was the case this year, the Blues will travel interstate five times in Season 2014, with away matches against Brisbane, GWS Giants, Sydney, Fremantle and Port Adelaide.

Carlton will play a total of four day matches, four twilight matches, and 13 night matches, which includes two Thursday night games and a Monday night showdown with St Kilda in Round 8.

The timeslot for the return clash with Essendon is yet to be locked in, as the AFL has again opted for a floating fixture for Round 23.

Carlton CEO Greg Swann says he’s happy with the fixture.

“Overall it’s a good result and there are no major surprises,” Swann said.

“We’re pleased to have the opportunity to play in 13 night matches, which is a reflection of our strong number of television viewers.”
