GOOD to be back.
While it wasn’t the result that Sam Walsh wanted for his return to football, the 22-year old was glad to be doing what he loved – playing football.
Having missed any games or simulations since Round 22 last year, Walsh was glad to be out on the park, getting involved and getting a good run under his belt.
“It was a tough start – that’s not the way you want to start on the road and I think we learnt a fair few lessons around the ball so it was a bit disappointing in that aspect,” Walsh said.
“For me, it was good to get out there and hit a few bodies – I felt confident in my body which was the main thing.”
The Blues had a disappointing loss to the Crows at Adelaide Oval, but Walsh held his own in his return, totalling 25 disposals, 12 contested possessions, seven tackles and a goal.
Noting he had plenty to work on, Walsh was still glad he was able to contribute to the team and looks forward to getting on with his development.
“I missed it so much and while it wasn’t the result we wanted tonight, it still brings a smile to my face that I was able to get out there and feel good,” he said.
“I still think I have a fair bit to work on but that’s exciting – that’s why it’s good playing a game.”
On the game itself, Walsh admitted the team felt disconnected and were disappointed with their efforts – especially in the first quarter.
Looking ahead to next week, Walsh hopes the team can respond against the undefeated Saints, knowing the Blues will be up for the challenge.
“[‘Vossy’] touched on the start, but the ability to own it around the contest and keep working as a team – we felt a bit disconnected tonight for a few reasons,” he said.
“The best thing about footy is you can respond next week and I’m sure we’ll do that.
“We’ve got a 10-day break now so I think we’ll get to work on a few things.”
