While he’s stationed at the other end of the ground, Sam Docherty is looking forward to seeing what Carlton’s forward mix can achieve in 2019.
Speaking on Sportsday WA, Docherty mentioned the key talent which the Blues have in attack for next season and how keen he was to see them make an impact.
Carlton’s newest joint captain said the acquisition of Mitch McGovern - one of 11 new Blues - had given the playing group a boost.
“He’s a character, Mitch — all the boys are loving having him around,” Docherty said.
“He’s got some leadership qualities and we’re looking forward to having him on the track more regularly. He started training with the group last week.”
After arriving from Adelaide in the trade period, McGovern joined emerging talls Charlie Curnow and Harry McKay as a forward option for the Blues.
Docherty said the depth in options in attack was something he was very enthusiastic about seeing unfold.
“Charles [Curnow] might have a bit of trouble fitting in the forward line with ‘Big H’ there and Mitch coming into the Club,” he laughed.
“Then we’ve got Levi Casboult, a couple of ruckmen as well with guys like Tom De Koning.

“It’s an exciting prospect to have some big key talent down there. There’s a lot of competition for spots which is going to be great for our team.”
With the weather heating up heading into the Christmas break, so do the expectations and preparations for the Carlton playing group.
Docherty said there was a key focus for the Blues as pre-season continues to tick along.
“You can’t win games in November and December, but you can definitely lose them,” Docherty said.
“It’s a privilege to open up the season against Richmond… We’re in that phase of getting our group ready, fit and good to go for Round 1. There’s a lot of work to come.”
The 25-year-old said a united front at Ikon Park meant the Blues were revelling in the hard work of the pre-season.
“In terms of the environment at the Club, we’ve got a really good core group of young guys who are very talented and want to take us forward,” Docherty said.
“We’ve got some senior leaders who have been at the Club for a number of years to lead that group.
“The coaching staff are so hard-working and have the same drive as the players to take us to a new level as a football club. It’s exciting.”
