LEWIS Young’s efforts on Thursday night didn’t go unnoticed, picking up six AFLCA coaches’ votes in Round 1.

Breaking through as a key defensive cog in 2022, Young took his game to another level against Richmond, playing a pivotal role on prolific forward Jack Riewoldt.

Not only did Young hold Riewoldt to a singular goal, but the 24-year-old also contributed 14 intercept possessions, eight marks and five one percenters on a night where the Blues’ defenders drew praise for staying cool under pressure.

George Hewett also earned three votes for his comeback performance after missing the backend of 2022 with a back injury.

Playing his first game since Round 18 last year, the midfielder was his usual self from the first bounce, busy at the source and always putting his head over the ball.

Bursting out of the blocks with 21 first-half disposals (28 for the game), Hewett finished with 14 contested possessions, eight clearances and four tackles, with his physicality and ball-winning abilities shining through in the Carlton midfield brigade.
