Carlton Football Club is delighted to have secured the signatures of two of the competition’s leading female footballers.   

Announced on Wednesday at Etihad Stadium, Brianna Davey and Darcy Vescio will pull on the navy blue guernsey in the newly established national women’s league competition from 2017. 

Inaugural Carlton women’s coach Damien Keeping said he was thrilled to welcome the dynamic pair to the Blues. 

“Both Darcy and Brianna are exceptional talents and we are so pleased that they will be our two foundation female players for the Carlton Football Club,” Keeping said. 

“Not only are they talented footballers, they are wonderful young women who drive high standards and we are sure they will bring this into our new program.

“It is an exciting time for the Carlton Football Club and both Darcy and Brianna will be looking forward to developing their game to another level ahead of the inaugural women’s season.”

Head of Football Andrew McKay said the Club was excited by the prospect of the duo lining up in the navy blue guernsey.

“We are delighted Darcy and Brianna have chosen the Carlton Football Club as their preferred destination ahead of the inaugural national women’s league season,” McKay said. 

“We are confident they will have long and successful careers at the Blues and we are excited about what they can achieve in this ground-breaking capacity at our club.” 

Vescio is one of the best forwards in the game, using her pace and strong attack on the ball to regularly put herself in dangerous positions and often hitting the scoreboard. 

The 22-year-old was drafted at Pick No.3 to the Western Bulldogs’ women’s team in 2014 and was named in the Victorian State Team in both 2013 and 2015. A three-time premiership player for the Darebin Falcons in the VWFL, Vescio was awarded best on ground in the 2015 Grand Final.

Davey was introduced to AFL early on, playing her junior footy with the boys before crossing codes to soccer. A former member of the Matildas squad, she is one of a handful of female footballers that have played another sport at the highest level.

The defender/midfielder played with the Western Bulldogs in 2015 and 2016  and currently lines up with the St Kilda Sharks. The 21-year-old played in the W-League for Melbourne Victory (2010 – 2015) and Melbourne City (2016), winning two championships.
