ON FIELD, you’ll typically find little separating Abbie McKay and Mimi Hill.

From the bottom of the pack to laying a crunching tackle, the duo have stepped up in the midfield to provide the spark in the Blues’ engine room throughout season seven.

Carlton’s AFLW Best and Fairest night followed the same script, with just two votes between the pair’s first and second place finishes, as Hill narrowly claimed victory over her midfield accomplice.

However, if you asked either, they would be quick to credit their counterpart for their success.

In the speech following her win last Friday night, Hill did exactly that.

“My partner in crime, Abbie McKay – thanks for doing all the tackles that I don’t do,” Hill joked.

Hill was quick to acknowledge the building chemistry within the midfield and the intuitive gameplay that she has developed alongside McKay.

“I love playing with ‘Gail',” she said.

“We always joke about knowing what the other one is going to do before they even do it. That connection you build with people after you play with them for a few seasons – that’s what Abbie and I have now. We just love playing with each other.”

The admiration was a sentiment reciprocated by McKay.

“'Mim' is a star. Everyone can see that when she’s on the field – she’s so young and is such a powerful player. She can really open a game up, which I admire,” McKay said.

“We loved playing alongside one another. I feel like I can feel where she is on the field, and I think she’s the same. There’s always someone to pass it to and I always trust her, and hopefully she trusts me.”

Much like their AFLW Best and Fairest placings, Hill and McKay held first and second position at the Blues for disposals, contested possessions and clearances in season seven.

Their midfield dominance was rewarded with selection in the AFLPA 22under22 squad for season seven, with McKay going on to be named in the final fan-voted team.

McKay was also named the ‘Most Improved Player’ in the AFLW Coles Fan Awards, while Hill’s Best and Fairest victory backed up her NAB Rising Star win in season six.

With Hill just 20 years of age and McKay 22 years old (despite having already notched five AFLW seasons), the future is bright.

"We’re going to keep building over the next pre-season and I can’t wait for the duo to be back again next year,” Hill said.
