FOLLOWING the launch of the Carlton Respects: Road to Respect digital learning platform and ahead of the sixth annual AFLW Carlton Respects Game on Friday night, the players weighed in on what Carlton Respects means to them.

On the importance of educating the next generation

Lucy McEvoy

“It's so important to be able to spread the message to kids growing up about the importance of gender inequality and stopping it in its tracks early. We can see the effects it has on people when they get older and it can have some pretty grim outcomes for those who are affected."

Nat Plane

“From a young age, you’re a bit of a sponge and you can imitate what you see around you. Sharing statistics around what Carlton Respects is all about is important and letting young kids know what a respectful relationship looks like and how to make everyone from all walks of life feel safe.”

Jess Dal Pos

“School teaches you how to be an adult, it teaches you how to be a good human being. All the lessons you learn in school and having respectful relationships as a number one platform to learn everything else you know about the world is really important.”

On the Carlton Respects: Road to Respect digital learning platform

Jess Dal Pos

“The Road to Respect program is really important because we get to reach kids and teach them how to have respectful relationships really early in their life so they can then educate each other and their friends.”

Breann Moody

"The best way to reduce the impact of violence against women and the issues that arise with it is to educate the younger generations through a preventative measure.

“It’s so important to me because it makes me proud to play for a club that values gender equality and wanting to have an impact on such big social issues and trying to make the world a better place.”

On what they’ve learned through the Carlton Respects program

Nat Plane

“You become more aware of the statistics around it [gendered violence] and just how often it can occur, it’s something that happens every day. Teaching myself to always make sure that other people are okay and feeling safe in whatever environment they’re in.”

Jess Dal Pos

“It’s taught me how to have hard conversations, and conversations that I otherwise wouldn’t have had – especially in a workplace environment, which I know scares people. It’s given me the tools to have healthy and hard conversations that haven’t been had before, which is really important because it’s got to start somewhere."

On the significance of Carlton Respects Round

Breann Moody

“The Carlton Respects Game is always a really exciting one for us in the fixture. It’s an opportunity for us to play for not only ourselves and the Club, but for a broader community that have been affected by domestic violence or gender equality issues.”

Lucy McEvoy

“We always look forward to playing in the Carlton Respects Game. It means a lot to all of us, and is such an important round to spread the message and we take great pride in being able to participate in the round.”

Jess Dal Pos

“To have Carlton Respects on the sporting platform is really huge. We know that via sports, we reach a really large community in Australia, so I’m pumped to have that out and about, and to people that otherwise wouldn’t think about it and otherwise wouldn’t touch on it.”
