DOM Akuei will remain in Navy Blue for 2023 after agreeing to continue as a Category B rookie.
Akuei made history last year as the first signing from the Carlton Academy and took the time to hone his craft in the VFL this season.
The 20-year-old played the first half of the year in the backline before a stint in attack, showcasing an impressive vertical leap which made him capable of pinch-hitting in the ruck, which he did with good effect throughout the VFL finals series.
Akuei played all bar one VFL game this year, showcasing some strong defensive moments in Round 6 against North Melbourne while kicking the match-winning goal against the Northern Bullants in Round 10.
Carlton Head of List Management Nick Austin said Akuei’s time at the Carlton Academy has put him in good stead heading into another year on the Blues’ list.
“We’ve been impressed with Dom’s increased development this season and look forward to working with him for another year,” Austin said.

“Dom has the unique ability to be a key defender and a back-up ruck, which proved very beneficial to our VFL team and saw him cement his place in that side to play every game this season.
“Coming from the Carlton Academy means we’ve had our eyes on Dom for quite a while, and it’s a testament to the program that they are producing talent capable of standing up and being retained on an AFL list.
“Dom has shown a great amount of potential this year and we’re confident he will continue to grow in his development over the next year with us.”
