ABBIE McKay has made history at this year’s NAB AFL Women's Draft, becoming the first father-daughter recruit in AFLW history.
The eldest daughter of 1995 Carlton premiership player Andrew McKay, the Blues selected the young midfielder with pick No.16, having matched Collingwood's bid.
A product of the Sandringham Dragons, the 17-year-old kicked a goal and was named in Carlton’s bests in her VFLW debut for the Blues against Essendon at Windy Hill.

Taking part in the under-18 national championships on the Gold Coast, McKay represented Vic Metro and was also asked to showcase her skills at this year’s AFLW draft combine.

AFLW senior coach Daniel Harford said he was delighted to be part of this historic moment, but emphasised McKay’s selection came down to her football ability.
“While this is a wonderful story and proud moment for the Club, we selected Abbie because we see a smart footballer who will greatly contribute to our women’s program,” Harford said.
“Playing in the exhibition match at Adelaide Oval and being invited to participate in the AFLW combine indicates to me that she’s a quality player, and we look forward to the McKay name continuing on at Carlton.”
Welcome, Abbie!
