After a gruelling 22-hour journey from Australia, the Blues wasted no time in taking advantage of Flagstaff's brilliant training facilities.

Saturday morning saw the boys up bright and early to take part in running drills at their base for the next two weeks, Northern Arizona University.

Despite a bone-chilling wind, the players completed a brisk 45-minute work out, using the drill as an opportunity to acclimatise to Flagstaff's altitude.

Reigning John Nicholls Medallist Heath Scotland said it felt good to blow a few cobwebs out.

"It was by no means a taxing session, but it certainly took a bit out of us. It takes you longer to recover when you're training at altitude," Scotland said.

The playing group also had endure another new element to their training regime - snow.

Temperatures dipped to as low as -1 degree on Saturday, and a fresh cover of powder on the university's track provided a lot of the team with a new running experience.

Scotland said the icy challenge wasn't lost on his teammates.

"We'll definitely be purchasing gloves for our next training run… We don't want anyone getting frostbite!"
