CARLTON has selected from its own talent pool, picking up VFLW-listed Blue Lily Goss with pick No.48 (Victorian pick No.26) in the 2022 NAB AFL Women’s Draft.
Goss was one of the VFLW Blues’ best players in the 2022 VFLW season, coming runner-up in the best-and-fairest count last Friday in a season where she was as reliable and consistent as anyone.
An effective midfielder on both sides of the ball, Goss showcased her ability to make an impact offensively while also putting in a shift defensively. She averaged over 15 disposals per game this season, while also registering seven games with eight tackles or more.
The 22-year-old possesses a strong football IQ and has displayed unquestionable effort when it comes to both her preparation and in-game commitment, recording repeat efforts and doing whatever is necessary for the betterment of her team.
Following her selection, Carlton General Manager of Women’s Football Brett Munro was excited that Goss can add to her Carlton journey in a significant result for not only the player, but also the Club’s VFLW program.
“We’ve seen Lily perform at a really high standard in the VFLW, and she’s done everything in her power to deserve this chance with our AFLW program,” Munro said.
“Lily prides herself on her defensive game, ending the season as our No.1 ranked player for tackles at VFLW level. She can impact the contest in a number of ways, she wins her own ball and she was a really consistent player for us at the level.
“She settled into the VFLW competition and, very importantly, the Club immediately in her first season and really put in the hard yards. We’re confident that she’ll continue that upward climb in her development.
“It’s a credit to Lily that she gets this chance and all involved with the VFLW program, particularly coach Tom Stafford – we’re looking forward to her taking this next step.”
