MICHAEL Voss is confident that his team can produce their style in the big clash with Essendon on Friday night.
Expecting a passionate crowd at the MCG tomorrow in a big game for both sides, Voss is hoping that the team can focus on the task at hand against the arch rival.
Here's what he had to say on Friday night's clash.
On the bye:
"We’re feeling good. You always use the bye as a reset on things and to be able to check in on where we’re at. Outcome-wise, we feel like we’ve set a strong base to work from and now we come into the second half of the season starting with Essendon.
"You don’t get a rest in this game: it’s obviously a very big game and it’s clearly a big game for them so we’re looking forward to it.
On the learning from the Collingwood game:
"A lot of the time when we looked at that game, we were pretty disappointed with our performance. Even though we got a look at the end of the game, it probably wasn’t what we focused on: it was the way we went about it, there were some things we were disappointed with.
"Clearly we didn’t bring enough or consistent enough around our contest for the day and we certainly didn’t buy into the defensive part of the game as well. We got looks at the other end but if you look at the way we went about it, it certainly wasn’t consistent with what we’ve seen for the most part of the year, so we have to reset on those parameters for us and give ourselves the best chance in this game."
On Harry McKay:
"He’s done everything that he needs to do. He’s been fairly uninterrupted with his preparation and he’s an absolute pro, so that’s given him the best chance to be able to get out there.
"He came off the operation quite well so that’s always a great start and he was able to get into his rehab pretty quickly. He’s probably a week or two ahead of where he should be but I think if you ask Harry, he always had an eye on this round.
"We’re pleased he’s back, we’ve done a fantastic job trying to manoeuvre around and there’s been some flow-on effects but we can get our team settled a bit in the front half and certainly around the ball."
On Caleb Marchbank:
"I think it becomes a little bit more than what position he plays. It’s got to do with the energy and spirit he brings as well. He’s going to have a job he has to get done and he has to focus on all the things he’s required to do for us.
"Clearly we’re pretty pumped with the news and we’re pretty excited that he’s playing, they’ve all shared on his journey and I’ve only shared a small part of it. He’s even had some ups and downs in that small window and a longer journey than that trying to get back.
"The boys are clearly well and truly invested in him and we’re all pretty pumped to have him. There’s probably a lot of well wishers out there and it gives him the chance to absorb it a bit and get settled into the week and focus on all the right things.
"The right thing for us is making sure he jumps in on that back six or seven and works in with the guys beside him. We’re not after any heroics, he just needs to get in there and get the job done and if he can do that for us, that sets us up well."
On the importance of the game for Essendon:
"We’ve had a few of these games which have been about the response for the opposition. They’re part of the variables that come into the game, but what I hope we’re about is being able to play the way we want to play.
"That’s a few things we were off on [last game], so it really shouldn’t matter for us where we play, the opposition we play or their motivations that they bring to the game. There’s a certain expectation in the way we go about it and we fully expect to be able to play that way."
On playing in front of big crowds:
"We’re blessed to be able to play in these sort of games, we really look forward to it. A couple of weeks ago, playing against Collingwood, 80,000 people and then playing Essendon this week in front of a large crowd.
"These are great opportunities to be able to play in front of a big crowd, another great chance to get in front of our supporter base and bring that energy and excitement. We’re pretty determined to make sure we get our style away in this game and represent ourselves really well."
