After a solid performance against Port Adelaide, Carlton youngster Patrick Cripps believes the Blues are “building a good platform” for the future.
Carlton has started the second half of the season well, holding on to beat the Power in a gutsy four-point win at the MCG last Saturday.
"Crippa", who stands at 194cm and weighs 90kgs, had 31 disposals against Port Adelaide including 12 tackles and ‘that’ over-the-head handball to Tom Bell, which resulted in a goal.
The Blues, who had been building towards their next win, were able to generate some confidence heading into the bye after playing a hard fought match against Adelaide the week before.
“I think the whole team is playing with confidence now and I think earlier in the year we weren’t so it’s definitely good to see,” Cripps told Radio Sport National on Thursday morning.
The big-bodied midfielder praised his captain Marc Murphy, who has played a key role in building the team’s recent good form.
“I think the last three weeks he’s really led by example and he’s playing some great footy,” Cripps said.
In his second season at the Blues, Cripps is having a breakout year as his hard work on the training track starts to pay off.
When he first arrived at the club in 2013, the Western Australian said transitioning from under 18s to AFL was “pretty full on”.
“Training definitely takes it out of you … you head home and you sleep from 4pm to 6pm, get up, have dinner and go back to sleep.”
“The first year is the building block for the rest of your career – the second year is definitely easier,” Cripps said.
His recent form suggests he’s now well and truly handling the tempo of AFL football, with his Round 4 performance against St Kilda earning Cripps an AFL Rising Star nomination.
This Sunday afternoon the Blues will battle it out with Gold Coast under the roof at Etihad Stadium and Cripps says the players will be looking to make it two wins in a row.
“We’re going to head out there and try to (win again). I definitely think we can and hopefully we come out and give it a good crack,” he said.
