THE NORTHERN Bullants will enter the VFL's final home-and-away round placed fourth on the ladder after thrashing the Coburg Tigers by 105 points on Sunday at NAB Oval.
The Bullants' top four spot will be under threat this week from either the Box Hill Hawks, who are placed fifth on the same amount of wins, or the Casey Scorpions, who are sixth with one less win but a commendable percentage.
The Hawks and Scorpions play each other on Sunday at Box Hill City Oval.
Coach David Teague talks about how some of the Carlton-listed players went in the big win.
The boys played very well on Sunday; it was Coburg's last game and they had a couple of players out, but our boys played a good four quarters of footy for the first time in awhile.
Coburg didn't score in the first quarter, but there was a howling breeze that was going down to our end of the field, which allowed us to score heavily in the first and third.
The pleasing thing was, when they had the breeze, we limited their scoring and we actually outscored them in the last quarter against the breeze.
The boys defended well, but they also attacked well too, which was good.
The win gave us the percentage to get us into fourth, and it gives us a chance for a top four spot if we win this week. We didn't go out there with that in mind, but I think the boys are pretty excited about knocking off Frankston this week to give us a chance.
Brad Fisher kicked four and was really good. He had a good battle with his opponent, who took some good overhead marks. 'Fish' found a bit of space out the back and mixed up his game rather than just hit-up lead all day, which was good to see.
David Ellard was excellent. He finished with 38 possessions, 14 tackles and two goals. He started on the bench and came on and had an impact and was really good around the stoppages with Adam Bentick, Shaun Grigg and Darren Pfeiffer.
Chris Johnson played on the wing and off half-back, but with the breeze, he used his beautiful kick and managed to get three first-quarter goals, which was really good because he got us off to a good start.
Chris Yarran was very lively early. They tried to get into him physically and it didn't worry him; he kept attacking the footy. He actually copped a big poke in the eye from Sammy Jacobs, which didn't help and slowed him down for a little while.
We played him through the midfield as well, and his work rate has improved.
Big Sammy had 45 hit-outs, which was massive. He was nice and strong around the ball, but then he followed up with some good second and third efforts winning the ball and having six tackles, which was good.
It was Robbie Warnock's fifth game, and he was solid in the ruck and won a bit more ball. He did a couple of beautiful passes into our forward line to set up a few goals. We increased his game time and he got through 75 minutes. He looks like he's starting to do it easy, and that his match fitness is ready to go.
Steven Browne played out of the backline and was really defending first but giving us plenty of run and drive out of the back half. He was really courageous overhead and really lifted the team.
Shaun Grigg played in the midfield, and he came up against Mark Coughlan, who is a good player. They probably had similar possessions, but Shaun got him for effectiveness.
Someone will have to go up for Richard Hadley, and Dennis Armfield will probably come back from injury while Shaun Hampson is a chance.
In a 105-point win, we had a lot of good players that have all put their hand up, but especially the ones listed above will be in the mix.
We'll get fourth position if we beat Frankston this week, unless Box Hill flog Casey by a massive amount and we just win.
It will be a hard game though, with Frankston on their home ground in their last game for the year. They're going to be tough opposition, so we have to play near our best to give ourselves a chance to win this one.
