A COLLECTIVE effort got the job done for Carlton in its Round 2 win over the Western Bulldogs.

Kicking out to a big lead and holding on when challenged by last year's Grand Finalists in the second half, there were contributors all over the field for the Blues, who emerged with a 16.6 (102) to 13.12 (90) victory.

Here's what stand-in coach Ash Hansen said on a number of key Carlton performances.

On Patrick Cripps:

“He’s just been a sensational leader through action and the work he’s doing behind the scenes that many don’t see. The selfless nature of his game has never been greater.

“As much as he had centre-bounce clearances, there were some fantastic blocks in there to allow others to dominate and get field position. He’s got a lot of support around him at the moment and he’s buying into sharing that workload.”

On the impact of the tall forwards:

“I thought both our talls got reward for their work. We felt last week that they worked extremely hard and provided opportunities for our smaller forwards and our mids in the front half. Tonight, they got their own opportunities to take the ball and convert on goal.

“Charlie is loved because he has been through a fair bit over his footy journey and he’s such a loveable kid that you want to see him out there doing what he loves. I’m really pleased for Charlie and Harry to get a bit of reward tonight.”

On George Hewett’s selfless role:

“As a coaching group, we respect what Marcus [Bontempelli] is able to do and the momentum he can build for others around him. George did a fantastic job for a period of time to pay a little bit of attention there and once again, it’s another example of a player doing a role for the team.”

On Sam Walsh’s return:

“He’s a professional. I don’t know the specifics of what came out of the surgery, but all I know is that the medical reports were really positive when he came out in terms of his range of motion and the swelling he had.

“He’s an absolute professional that did everything right: he’s the first at the Club and the last to leave. The way he stepped in tonight in a game like that was outstanding and speaks volumes.”

On Lochie O’Brien:

“I loved his tackle on the three-quarter-time siren. It’s great growth for Lochie.

“We know his running capacity and ability to use the footy, but he’s really starting to buy into the contest. When he does stuff like that, it inspires his teammates.”

On Matthew Kennedy’s final term:

“His last month has been huge, but certainly when he came to the bench, he was the leading disposal-getter on the ground.

“He set the tone early and that’s what we asked from that first 10 minutes, to reinforce how we wanted to play and get back the ascendancy because we felt the Bulldogs had that. He led the way.”

On Jacob Weitering’s role on Aaron Naughton:

“Jacob really sets himself for those one-on-one battles. We saw what he was capable of last year with his performance across the whole season. He set himself again tonight and he had some great support from those around him. The pressure on the ball has to be there, because if you give the opposition midfielders good looks, we knew the threat.”
