WITH 20 minutes worth of questions answered, there were bound to be some queries of AFL Senior Coach Michael Voss on certain individuals leading into the 2022 home-and-away season.
That was very much the case.
In yesterday's People's Presser, Voss was quizzed on all things Navy Blue, highlighting a number of players that have put their best foot forward in pre-season.
This is what he had to say.
Oscar McDonald
'He’s not “new”, but Oscar McDonald has been really impressive. He was a bit slower at the start of pre-season in getting himself going, as he was recovering from that back injury from last year. Since Christmas, he has really gone well. He’s not in the brand-new category, but he’s certainly new in terms of playing football.
"He’s put himself in a really strong position, absolutely, to be able to play that key post. The thing we’re really liking about Oscar is that he understands our system really well, so he adapts to that. He’s put a lot of work into winning his battles. We need someone to be able to tie down that other post from time to time, and if he can work in tandem with Weitering and the other defenders, then that would be a huge plus for us."
Corey Durdin and Matthew Owies
"We’ve had really strong pre-seasons from those guys. A big emphasis has been on forward pressure: without being able to get that, we’re not going to be able to get the ball in stronger positions on the ground to be able to score from. It’s been a big focus and those guys have really taken to it in that role that we ask them to do. They’ve had really strong pre-seasons and as you saw [on Thursday], they’ve contributed really well as teammates on the day.
"Corey has been really impressive: he’s one that has put his hand up. Matty Owies, who’s not so much in the younger basket but is in that development phase of his career where he’s getting better as he goes, has improved enormously throughout the year."
Zac Williams
"We think we can get a little bit from Zac. The main priority for him is to be playing across half back: we feel like that’s where he’ll spend most of his time. But the great thing with Zac, which he has already articulated to us, is that we can put him through the midfield and also play him up forward if needed.
WHO PLAYS WHERE? Voss on 2022 positional changes
"As a coach, that’s particularly good to have, because if you have some things at half time that are needed, such as if you’re not getting something across half forward, you can put someone like Zac forward. You can put Mitch [McGovern] in the same basket as well, to be able to go forward and have some impact and provide something different to your football team. He’ll be mainly across half back, but we’ll look at other avenues when needed."
Jack Silvagni as a second ruck option
"Jack is still very keen to relieve in the ruck where needed. That’s a selection decision that we’d need to have a think about, whether we use Jack in that capacity or whether Tom [De Koning] comes in and plays as that second ruck and relieves ‘Pitto’. There are some real strong advantages of being able to have both options, to be able to go with the taller option and have Tom relieve in the ruck and up forward, or also with ‘SOS’ being able to play that role.
"We saw with ‘SOS’ [on Thursday], he’s quite capable. He really enjoys getting into the ruck. I think he’s a little underestimated in the ruck: he competes really well and then gets after it at ground level."
"As long as I’m getting a game I’ll play wherever the coach wants me.”@jacksilvagni picked up from where he finished off last year, impressing in his dual role up forward and as second ruck. 🆘

Zac Fisher
"We think his impact is going to be forward and on-ball. You’ve seen enough of him to know how dangerous he is. His pre-season has been fantastic and was one of those guys last year that I’m sure was well and truly missed amongst the group.
"He provides that point of difference with that fleet of foot: he’s got the dancing shoes on and knows how to get in and out of traffic. He gets the ball movement going, there’s a fair bit going for him. He provides a lot of spark for us. I’d say predominantly forward, with some spurts on-ball."
Sam Docherty playing on the wing upon return
"He might: that’s going to be as much to do with our depth across half back and where we feel like we’ve got some options. Across that half-back line there’s some strong depth there, which will be a selection headache throughout the year which is great. It’s then a question of where we want ‘Doc’, because we’re also mindful that he’s been an All-Australian defender, so he’s pretty impressive in that position as well!
"We’ll wait and see with where we play him, but I must admit I do have a bias about seeing him dash from the backline and break those lines. One big thing will emerge, as has happened in the last few years, that defences have become stronger and stronger. Being able to try and get through that layer of defence and break through, you need players who are able to do that, and he’s got that strength. Whether he does that from the wing or half back will be exceptionally important."
