Carlton young gun Marc Murphy admitted to a sense of relief after the Blues saw off the Tigers in the opening round on Sunday, saying there had been pressure to deliver after the NAB Cup premiership.

“I think we put last year behind us over summer. There was more pressure this week after the NAB Cup and to see if we could deliver it in the premiership season,” he told carltonfc.com.au.

Having enjoyed a stirring rendition of the team song, with recruits Bryce Gibbs, Cameron Cloke and Cain Ackland in the middle of the circle, Murphy said wins like today were vital for the confidence of the younger Blues.

“We’ve won our last four and there was pressure coming into this round. It’s good to get a win and get off to a good start. It was very important for me and the other younger players. I only played in two wins last year, so this is confidence-building for all the younger guys and we’re enjoying it.”
