Another Irishman will debut for Carlton when Ciaran Byrne runs out against Essendon at the MCG on Saturday.
The 20-year-old from County Louth, who signed with Carlton as a Category B International Rookie at the end of the 2013 season, says it’s been an intense 18 months learning a whole new ball game.
“I’ve worked really hard on my game and I’ve tried to act like a sponge and absorb as much information as possible,” Byrne said.
“Now I’m getting my chance at the ‘G this Saturday running out against Essendon, which is fantastic, but most importantly for the team I want us to get a win.”
Byrne played in 14 matches for Carlton's VFL affiliate the Northern Blues last season, spending time both as a forward and on the backline.
He impressed over the pre-season, playing in Carlton’s senior side for the first time in the NAB Challenge game against West Coast, before being upgraded from the Blues’ rookie list last week.
Carlton coach Mick Malthouse says Byrne has earned his opportunity.
“He demonstrated last year a willingness to grab hold of our game,” Malthouse said.
“It’s a fantastic story .. he’s one of those kids who is so dedicated to try to get it right and that’s what you love about him.”

Byrne’s parents Pauline and Brendan will be in the stands at the MCG for the big occasion, having arrived in Melbourne from Ireland on Thursday.
His mum says “Casey” has always worked hard and dreamed big – and she couldn’t be more proud.
“He has always been very dedicated and disciplined, no matter what he has turned his hand to, so it’s just wonderful to see him get this opportunity,” she said.
