DESPITE the pre-season slog, the relief on Tom Williamson’s face is evident.
After all, a return to the track following a year completely ruled out through injury would please most people in the same predicament.
Williamson returned to training a week ago with his fellow first to fourth year Blues, in what will be his third pre-season at Ikon Park.
One of a number of players who Bluebaggers are keeping a close eye on this summer, Williamson said he was delighted to be back in the fold.
“This is my third pre-season and I’m really excited to get back in and to be around the group,” Williamson said.
“I’m keen get some good, solid work in over the next few months.”
Williamson’s 2018 was initially delayed and then wiped out due to a troublesome back injury, which restricted him from playing any AFL football after 15 games in year one.
Williamson was pleased to shed positive light on his injury, saying he was feeling no ill effects of what hampered his second season.
“The back is 100 percent better, I can happily say that now,” Williamson said.
“I’m feeling really confident in my body. I’m looking forward to a big year.”
While admitting there was “a little bit of rust” to start off with, the 19-year-old — who celebrates a birthday next month — hasn’t missed a beat since returning to Ikon Park last week.

Williamson said he couldn’t wait to return to training as the off-season turned into pre-season.
“I was so keen — you take it a bit for granted until you miss out on that much training and work. I’m a lot happier and I can’t wait for the year,” Williamson said.
“The main focus for me would be to stay out on the park, get some good work into my body and make it durable for the year ahead.”
Williamson reserved praise for a pair of key forwards, who have impressed him on the track as pre-season heats up.
“For me, I’ve liked Patty Kerr. I think he’s built his aerobic capacity very well over the last few months and I think he can take his game to the next level,” Williamson said.
“Tom De Koning as well — it looks like he’s put in some work in the gym and is looking a lot stronger.”
