Just 31 games into his AFL career Sam Rowe will take another big step in his football journey on Friday night, when he captains Carlton in the NAB Challenge game against West Coast in Mandurah.

Rowe, who is new to Carlton’s leadership group this year, will lead the team in the absence of Marc Murphy. Murphy will miss the game with a calf strain but is expected to take his place in the side for the final two NAB Challenge games.

The elevation to acting skipper comes on the back of a breakout season in which Rowe earned Carlton’s Most Improved Player award.

Speaking to the Herald Sun the 27-year-old said he’s honoured to get the call up.

“As far as the captaincy for Friday night, I was lucky enough to get the nod,” Rowe said.

“It’s always nice to know you have the support of the players and coaches – everyone has to support each other in this game if you’re going to have success.

“I like to attack everything I do so maybe that sets a good example and shows leadership. I can’t say I ever really thought about being a leader although I was vice-captain of the under-14s cricket side,” he joked.

Carlton’s team to take on West Coast will be named at midday on Wednesday.
