Murphy commits to Carlton through to 2018
Marc Murphy’s loyalty has again been demonstrated, with his signing of a new contract seeing him through to the end of 2018.
The 26-year-old, who has one year to run on his existing contract, finalised terms at Visy Park today.
“I am thrilled and feel very honoured to be able to re-commit to the Carlton Football Club,” said Murphy.
“Carlton has been my home for the better part of a decade, so I have always wanted to repay the faith.
“It seems so long ago since the journey began, and in some respects it only seems like yesterday, but I love this club and I plan to stay Carlton for life.”
Carlton’s General Manager – Football Operations Andrew McKay said Murphy’s commitment reflects the captain’s belief in where the Blues are headed.
“The Carlton Football Club is delighted that Marc has seen fit to further his outstanding on-field career with us,” McKay said
“Murph’ is a popular bloke, a courageous player and inspiring leader.
“He goes about his business with little fuss or fanfare, so it’s of no real surprise that he’s earned the admiration and respect of his team.
“The players see him as an integral part of the team’s on-going successes and that’s a view shared by everyone else at Carlton.”
Murphy’s No.3 has been worn with distinction by Carlton luminaries such as Norman “Hackenschmidt” Clark and Mike Fitzpatrick. Four more games will see ‘Murph’ equal the Club games record of 169 in the No.3 set by the three-time Premiership player (and later Carlton Director) Kevin Hall, whose final game was the 1973 Grand Final.
The son of the five-time Fitzroy best and fairest John Murphy and grandson of Hawthorn’s dual club champion Leo Murphy, Marc Murphy’s on-field CV is littered with distinctions including All-Australian selection, the Coaches Association’s Player of the Year, and the John Nicholls Medal for Carlton’s Best and Fairest.
